IMPACT IS ALL YOU NEED
No pictures because I want readers to think about what impact they’d like to have. Hopefully my writing serves as a tool for them.
Impact Scales It ALL
Focusing on impact has one key benefit - it scales acquiring and spending of the following - knowledge, money, and power.
Until early last year, I used to think that knowledge is the key to everything but I really learned that creating impact is the best approach.
Impact Is The Simplest Choice - Occam’s Razor
Focusing on Impact is the simplest thing to do. Focusing on knowledge, money, or power can go awry often either because cost of acquiring can be too much or because you can get greedy. I think most of the world’s problems arise from people who focus on any one of the 3 a little too much.
Focusing on knowledge for a while taught me that I’m never going to get great at sharing my knowledge.
I don’t think I ever really focused on money or power but second hand accounts tell me that those who focus on money and power seldom get a lot of it. Perhaps they get lucky and get just enough to live affluently. But my guess is their expenditure is also pretty high so they’re likely not getting the full value out of their wealth.
Real Reasons for Wanting Knowledge, Money, or Power
Don’t get me wrong. I think people just tell you they want one of the 3 but a lot of times, they want it because they actually want to create impact. People who want money tend to want to create impact for their family and other loved ones. People who focus on power want to make changes to their community. People who focus on knowledge, well they might just enjoy learning.
Impact Scales It All AND Focusing on Impact Never Loses Track
If we know what impact is and what kind of impact we want to create, I don’t think we can ever lose touch with what we were meant to do. It’s just that some people chose impact over themselves, their families, their communities, or the whole world.
Just that the scope of impact is very different.
Ok. How About Academics, Investors/Traders, and Politicians?
Same principles of impact applies. Academics want to make impact by creating and spreading knowledge. Investors and traders want to make impact in their community by being a great investor/trader and leaving a legacy for those they care about. And Politicians want to make impact through their designated/voted in positions.
If we lose touch of this, I think things start to break down.
Sounds Pretty Simple Right?
Well, what more do you need? Everything else seems too complicated honestly.
